No. 477 – Understanding Our Time of Commitment in Worship 2026 04 05

By Barnabas ChoiPosted 05/30/2026
No. 477 – Understanding Our Time of Commitment in Worship 2026 04 05 "Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship." (Romans 12:1) The word commitment literally means "to offer oneself." It is often used to describe dedicating ourselves sacrificially to a cause or purpose. In the Bible, dedication was expressed through offerings brought to God for worship, forgiveness, and fellowship with Him. Today, true commitment means laying aside our own desires and devoting ourselves wholeheartedly to loving God, loving others, and serving His purposes. In previous messages, I have encouraged you to respond promptly whenever God speaks to your heart. When the Holy Spirit brings conviction, encouragement, or direction through His Word, it is important to make a clear decision and put that decision into action. Commitment often begins with a response to God's voice during worship. For that reason, our church provides a Time of Commitment following the sermon. If God has spoken to you and you sense His leading, I encourage you to come forward during this time and make your response known before Him. After all, faith is not merely a belief system—it is a relationship with God, and relationships are strengthened through decisions and responses. Here is how our Time of Commitment works: 1. The Congregation Stands Together Following the sermon, we sing a commitment hymn, and the entire congregation stands together. This helps remove the feeling that someone is stepping out alone. It allows those responding to God's call to come forward without unnecessary attention or discomfort. 2. A Commitment Card Is Completed Those who come forward are invited to fill out a commitment card. This helps us understand how we can best support and encourage you in your next step of faith. 3. A Time of Prayer At the conclusion of the hymn, we continue with our closing Scripture reading and benediction. On most Sundays, I greet people at the door following the service. However, when individuals respond during the Time of Commitment, I remain with them to pray personally and ask God's blessing upon their lives. Our commitment cards include the following response options: Church Membership Receiving Christ Baptism Recommitment Prayer Request This invitation is open to anyone: Those who would like to become part of the Atlanta Korean Baptist Church family. Those who want to receive Jesus Christ as Savior but are unsure how to begin. Those who desire to be baptized. Those who are recommitting themselves to live faithfully according to God's Word. Those who simply need prayer and encouragement. One reason we include a Prayer Request option is to make it easier for people to seek prayer without feeling self-conscious. Every church family includes people carrying burdens, facing challenges, or seeking God's guidance. By inviting people forward for prayer, we create a welcoming opportunity for anyone who needs spiritual support. When you share a prayer request, I will pray with you personally that day. In addition, I will continue to remember your request during my daily early-morning prayer time throughout the following week. During the moments of silent reflection after the sermon, I encourage you to listen carefully for the gentle voice of the Lord. If He is stirring your heart, do not hesitate. Come forward during the commitment hymn and respond to His leading. God often does His deepest work when we take that first step of faith.
