No. 483 – Why Does Church Membership Matter? 2026 05 17

No. 483 – Why Does Church Membership Matter? 2026 05 17 "Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." (Romans 12:1) Becoming a church member is about far more than belonging to an organization. It involves both privilege and responsibility. For that reason, while the church is open to everyone, not every responsibility or leadership role is automatically entrusted to everyone. The church is not merely a democratic association. It is a gospel community. Members are given responsibilities such as voting and serving in leadership because the church's decisions must be guided by a shared understanding of the gospel and a common commitment to Christ. Scripture describes the church as the body of Christ. Colossians 1:18 declares: "And He is the head of the body, the church." Just as a body follows the direction of its head, the church is called to follow the leadership of Christ. Therefore, the ministry, mission, and direction of the church should be entrusted to those who openly confess Jesus Christ as Lord and seek to follow Him faithfully. Jesus emphasized this truth in Matthew 16:16–19. When Peter confessed, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus responded by declaring that He would build His church upon that confession of faith. The church is not built merely on attendance, tradition, or cultural identity. It is built upon people who believe in and confess Jesus Christ. Church members are those who live as active parts of Christ's body. The early church followed this same principle. In Acts 6:3, when leaders were needed for an important ministry responsibility, the apostles instructed the congregation: "Choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom." Significant responsibilities were entrusted to believers whose faith and character had already been demonstrated. Without such standards, the church becomes vulnerable to confusion and instability. If every decision could be made regardless of faith, commitment, or spiritual maturity, the church would gradually lose its identity as a gospel-centered community. For this reason, church membership is not primarily a privilege—it is a calling. Members accept responsibility for loving the church, strengthening the fellowship, supporting the mission, and living in a way that reflects Christ. Church members also represent the church both inside and outside its walls. They bear the name of Christ wherever they live, work, study, and serve. Jesus said in Matthew 10:32: "Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven." That confession must be expressed not only through words but through daily life. Integrity, holiness, love, humility, and responsibility all become part of what it means to represent Christ and His church. For that reason, becoming a church member is not a small matter. Yet it is not something to fear. It is an invitation of grace. God calls believers to become living members of His body and to participate in His work in the world. And through the power of the Holy Spirit, He equips us to fulfill that calling. Our church seeks to remain open and welcoming to all people. At the same time, we desire to be a community clearly rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. As men and women respond to God's call, profess their faith, and commit themselves to Christ and His church, they become part of what God is building through Atlanta Korean Baptist Church. One faithful believer at a time, God continues to build His church.
